Pil Kim received his B.S. degree from Dept. of Food Technology, Korea University, Korea (1992). He received his biotechnology M.S. at Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) (1 994), focusing on biodegradable Pl-IB polymer production using methanol utilizing bacteria. He then received his Ph.D. at KAST (1998), focusing on the function-relationship of a microbial ceil produced lipopolysaccharide biosurfactant. He also carried out postdoctoral research at Korea Resarch Institute of Bioscience and Bioengineering (KRIBB) (1998), focusing on succinate production from a metabolic engineered E. coli. During his military service at Orion Confectionery Co. for 2 years (1999-2001), he originally developed an enzymatic process for tagatose, a natural rare sugar via directed evolution. Then he performed postdoctoral research at Michigan State University for 2 years focusing on the genetic tool development of a rumen Actinobacillus succinogenes for metabolic engineering (2001-2003). Then he enrolled as an assistant professor at the Catholic University of Korea (CUK) at 2004 and become a full professor since 2015. He has served as a Review Board in NRF of Korea for 3 years (2015-2018) and an Editor of J Microbiol. Biotechnol. for 10 years (2007-present). He also founded a service-providing company regarding heme, hemoproteins, and heme-producing non-GMO hosts since 2017.
