Dr. Sung is currently a senior researcher at the Cell Factory Research Center of Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) since 2010 and also affiliated as associate professor with the University of Science and Technology (UST), Korea. He completed his Ph.D. at the Department of Biological Sciences, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Before joining the KRIBB, he was a research professor at the KAIST Institute for BioCentury (KIB). His research has involved the development of microbial genome engineering tools and application of synthetic biology tools for constructing microbial cell factories. His research group is interested in clustering of biomolecules such as proteins and genes for metabolic flux control, valorization of lignin and CO2, and production of antimicrobial peptides with unnatural amino acids. As of October 2018, he published over 50 scientific articles and 40 patents. He has been awarded Woo Jae Research Award given for distinguished research for industrial microbiology and biomaterials through Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (2017).
