Dr. Hwang is currently a cluster leader and a senior research fellow at the Department of Biochemistry of National University of Singapore (NUS), leading therapeutic cell and mammalian synthetic biology research clusters at the Synthetic Biology for Clinical and Technological Innovation (SynCTI). Prior to joining NUS, she has received her PhD from the University of Auckland (New Zealand), in the field of cancer biology and therapeutics. She has expanded her research interest to Synthetic Biology by joining Chang lab in 2012. Her latest publications in ACS synthetic paper in 2014 and Nature Communications in 2017, involved engineering various programmable microbial behaviors to execute pathogen detection-mediated pathogen killing activity. Her work was notably mentioned in various media including Nature news and The Economist. Her research currently focuses on in-depth study and modulation of gut microbiome and its various physiological axis for human health.
