Prof. Atomi is currently a professor at the Department of Synthetic Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Japan since 2009. Prior to this, he was an associate professor in the same department and an assistant professor at the Department of Industrial Chemistry, Kyoto University, where he received his Ph.D. He was also a Post Doctoral researcher at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. His research group is highly interested in elucidating the function of hypothetical proteins that are encoded in microbial genomes, with a focus on metabolism in archaea and extremophiles. As of August 2018, he published approximately 200 scientific articles and gave many scientific presentations at international conferences. He has been awarded a young scientist award from the Extremophiles Society of Japan. He has chaired the Gordon Research Conference on Archaea in 2011, the 11th International Congress on Extremophiles in 2016 and the 15th Japan-China-Korea Joint Symposium on Enzyme Engineering in 2018.
